Sort barks two ways at once. By situation, behaviourists name seven: territorial, alarm, attention-seeking, greeting, compulsive, socially facilitated and frustration-induced. By sound they are one graded range, from rough, low, unmodulated barks in fast volleys to clear, higher, modulated barks with gaps. Identify one by combining both: how it sounded, and what the dog was doing.
The seven-way list comes from the ASPCA's behaviour material, and each entry has a tell. Territorial barking is aimed at people or animals approaching a place the dog treats as his. Acoustically, though, those seven do not come in seven flavours. Yin and McCowan analysed 4,672 barks from ten dogs of six breeds in 2004 and concluded that barks are graded vocalizations, ranging continuously from harsh, low-frequency, unmodulated calls to harmonically rich, higher-frequency, modulated ones. The doorbell situation clustered at the rough low end and was also longer with faster repetition; isolation and play clustered at the clear high end. The types are regions on one dial, not separate words.
Two practical consequences follow. A sound on its own is not a diagnosis, because isolation and play barks sit in the same acoustic neighbourhood and only the situation tells them apart. And the ranges are personal: the same study found individual dogs identifiable from their bark spectrograms regardless of context, which is why a fairly low bark from a small dog can still be that dog's warning.
Write them on a card: pitch (low, mid or high for this dog), harshness (rough and buzzy versus clear and almost musical), and spacing (a rapid volley versus single barks with gaps). Every type below is a combination of those three plus a situation. Back the files up somewhere you will still have them next month, because the value of the set grows with its age.
Play three of your clips to a housemate with no context and ask them to pick the situation from your list. Pongracz and colleagues showed that untrained listeners categorise recorded barks well above chance, so if nobody in the house can tell your dog's alarm bark from his greeting bark, the labels are probably wrong and the recordings need redoing with better notes about what was happening at the time.
Spend twenty minutes at a park or outside a training class listening rather than watching. Body size shifts pitch, so the only way to know whether your dog's bark is genuinely low is to have heard a range of dogs. This also heads off the most common mistake in the whole exercise: reading a small dog's high, fast barking as friendly and a large dog's low barking as hostile, when both may be doing exactly the same job. One drill is worth the trip: shut your eyes for a minute and name what each dog is doing before you look. Vision overrides hearing so completely that most people have never really listened to a bark until the picture is taken away.

It responds better to management than to training - mask the sound, move his resting place to the quiet side of the house, and avoid leaving him alone during the hour the neighbourhood chorus reliably starts.
It means he is asking for distance, which is not the same thing. Low, rough, unmodulated barking is what dogs produced at a stranger on the doorstep in Yin and McCowan's recordings, and it fits the broader pattern Morton described across birds and mammals, where low broadband sounds go with hostile contexts. Treat it as information handed over in advance. Punishing the warning is how dogs learn to skip it, which leaves you with less notice rather than a calmer dog.
