How The Beat

About this app

Turn the knob. A formula writes the beat.

HOW THE BEAT turns math into rhythm. Pick a channel, choose one of 18 formulas, and turn the dial: every click changes the value and the pattern rewrites itself in time with the music. Stack kick, clap, hats, bass and lead, then cut a vertical video of your beat in one tap.

■ 18 rhythm formulas
Euclid, Fibonacci, Collatz, Logistic, Primes, Automaton, Thue-Morse, Digits, Beatty, Recamán, LCG, Gray code, Polyrhythm, Morse, Harmonics, Lorenz, Bounce, Kuramoto. Each one grooves differently, and the formula stays on screen so you can see how the beat is made.
